People galvanized by Mexican rapper Niña Dioz are already coining her as “Mexico’s answer to M.I.A.” (although the same was said back in 2006 about a tiny, side ponytail-sporting Brit by the name of Lady Sovereign).
Niña Dioz delivers a fluidity that will get your head bobbing and the beats of her band MoodFu will keep people’s hands in the air. Her current status as breakthrough female rapper is held firmly in Mexico, but international stardom could be on its way. Until then, she should be spared being shoved into a genre no one can truly define. And last I checked, M.I.A. was playing the Grammys pregnant and Lady Sovereign was being called a “cunt” by Perez Hilton at SXSW, so let’s give Niña Dioz some time to infiltrate North America’s mainstream. Here’s the story on Ms. Dioz. Her 2007 EP “Marcapasos” is available online.
