News: John Mayer Plays Secret Hotel Cafe Show In Los Angeles: “Friends, Lovers Or Nothing” And Stuff: Mayer’s Got Some Chops.

Expecting only to see my lovely Berlin friend play her first LA show, I was surprised to find out around 7pm this evening from Anna Rosenthal that John Mayer would be playing a “secret” show at The Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles and I had front row seats to check it out. I only had to sit through four bands, drink two diet cokes, two beers, eat French Fries and sit under an air conditioning vent for four hours to see it!

Apparently Mayer sent out a tweet early evening telling his followers on Twitter that he would be playing around 11ish at the legendary Los Angeles venue. And the followers swarmed in with prowess.

The venue, which fits around 200 comfortably, was packed by around 930pm, and there was definitely a majority of women in the audience. Fans shouted audible love notes and Mayer jubilantly greeted the audience back. There was a brief discussion about Twitter‘s relevance in all of our lives — considering it was the reason why 90% of the audience was there — and then he stepped into his tracks.

Two new tracks he played were “Friends, Lovers Or Nothing”, “Half Of My Heart” and a third without title, but may just be called “Late Night Anthem”, or so Mayer stated after playing the track at the end of his set and leaving us warm and cozy. Check those out on an album in the near future.

In the meantime, I’m going to relish in my good fortune and I want to say thank you to my wonderful friend Anna for playing such an extraordinary show this evening! As this picture shows, she’s having quite the first Los Angeles trip.

Setlist:

1.I’m On Fire (Bruce Springsteen) into 3X5
2.Friends, Lovers or Nothing
3.Heartbreak Warfare
4.Half Of My Heart
5.Belief
6.Untitled new song ( something like “I should be allowed to get stoned”)
