    July 11 2010 Paul The Octopus was right all along, and Spanish fans were grateful. Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time for their first World Cup title in the nation’s history. In Mexico City, fans packed La Glorieta de la Cibeles – a replica of the Cibeles fountain in Madrid, and waived flags, drank booze, hissed with excitement, and expressed semi-uncomfortable admiration for replicas of the World Cup trophy. Mexican police stood guard, but all was harmless. Above, three Spanish soccer fans celebrate by yelling in my direction. More photos here.

    July 2 2010 I learned two things today. Mexican soccer fans will not cheer for a team that previously beat them in the World Cup. And – on occasions when an Uruguayan player uses his hands to block a goal – Mexicans will use the word boludo.

    March 3 2010 We were donning lucha libre masks when we arrived at the gates of the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Ca. The security guard told us they were not allowed and we agreed to take them off. 90k fans had already made their way in, but a few thousand were still converging on the stadium after sitting in traffic for more than an hour. We’d missed the entire first half of the Mexico/New Zealand matchup, but the score was 0-0 so we hadn’t missed much. We grabbed a few quick tacos and made our way toward section 7-H row
