So I awoke in a haze, put my headphones on, and watched the movement from my window. As much as I loved getting away from the city for the weekend, it was when we returned back to ciudad de la furia, in which these tracks were brought to fruition. Watching a city emerge and awake into the daylight & returning back to the hustle and bustle that was missed. Will I ever not love living in a metropolis?

You open your eyes to a day that started before you even managed a yawn. It was July of 2009 and my flight left JFK at 6am. My cab arrived and we hopped on the BQE around 445am. Manhattan was to my left. Queens was to my right. The horizon jostled a beautiful spectrum of colors only available before the raging sun fully rises. An empty road lay ahead of me and I felt at peace. The tranquility was overwhelming and I wondered why I didn’t take advantage of this time of day more often. I’d advise you to either turn your headphones down or get ready to make your eardrums bleed. This comes from Jay Reatard’s 2006 release “Blood Visions.” Oh, it’s such a shame you’re not going to be contributing guitar riffs like this to Punklandia anymore. Bang bang bang away to this, friends. It’s going to be a cold one in the city that never sleeps. This will help you stay awake.

I never knew what sounds like a defective fax machine would be so entrancing and likable. But that’s what Charlotte Gainsbourg’s second track “IRM” off of her album of the same name reminds me of. I can also hear what is undoubtedly fluorescent lights emitting feedback…or someone’s vibrator going off. Who knows!? Charlotte knows her soft voice and devious melodies make it all come together, and for that I have to post the track. I imagine this song goes better with a strobe light like karaoke is better when bottles of liquor are half empty. Enjoy.
