June 29 2010 I gave Matt my camera so he could take a few shots of us. I’m hardly ever ready to relinquish the role as memory-capturer, but today was a special occasion. This marks my last day with the StoryCorps’ team. We only gathered three times during my tenure at StoryCorps. We met for training, we met for a mid-year retreat, and now we meet again for our departure. Five of us our leaving, a sixth leaves in late August. April 24 2010 We disembarked from our trajinera at the lock. It’s a contraption built 24 years ago, after the 1985 earthquake, to take patrons from the touristy side of Xochimilco to the countryside. We were on our way back from Doll Island. Sergio says he was talking to Lipi and Sachin about India, and was distracted. Michael walked to the right of him. Anna and I were directly behind him. Without any warning, there was a splash and Sergio was gone. For three seconds, Sergio’s entire being had been swallowed by the murky grotesqueness of Xochimilco’s waters. “Holy shit!!!”

March 28 2010 I haven’t infiltrated the central nerve of this city, but the kindness of Fresno’s residents is apparent at almost every venue, street corner and establishment. A disheveled couple looked on as I took this photograph, smiled and wished me a great day. It’s the type of experience I’ve encountered almost every single day I’ve been here. Small(er) town charm? I don’t even care. I like your vibe, Fresno.
