June 27 2010 The finish line is Mexico City and I’m three days away. May 29 2010 Unlike the abundance of murals I found in the sleepy town of Fresno, Ca, Albuquerque’s murals and public paintings are few. The Barelas area of Fresno – a place mentioned to me as “the neighborhood where most ‘Cops’ episodes are shot in Albuquerque – showcases some wonderful Aztlan-esque paintings I’ve yet to photograph. [...] May 27 2010 Many of Albuquerque’s cafes, including Gold Street Cafe in Downtown Albuquerque, showcase local artists. I’ve yet to find a hub, or arts district in Albuquerque, but the scene is sprinkled subtly throughout most of the java joints in the city. May 7 2010 Seen walking through the Meat Packing District after a Highline stroll. Shepard Fairey’s newest political installation took over the corner of Houston and Bowery this weekend and NYMAG interviewed the artist during the raising of the piece. The space is a wall formerly occupied by Os Gemeos and made famous by Keith Haring. The Os Gemeos painting is preserved, but who knows how long Shepard’s collage [...] April 19 2010 Seat 12A. Aisle. Mexico City slowly showed itself when the haze began to subside. Anna told me to gchat immediately after landing and I obliged. I expected to find her staring down at me from the 3rd floor of our apartment building while I exited an Excelente cab. Instead, she was at the [...] March 28 2010 I haven’t infiltrated the central nerve of this city, but the kindness of Fresno’s residents is apparent at almost every venue, street corner and establishment. A disheveled couple looked on as I took this photograph, smiled and wished me a great day. It’s the type of experience I’ve encountered almost every single day [...] March 24 2010 I didn’t expect to find a rising art scene in Fresno, Ca. Then I drove down Broadway Street toward San Joaquin in Downtown Fresno, hit the breaks and swerved to park. I saw a colorful horse, vibrant, galloping on a giant canvas in a parking lot. I almost dropped my camera after it [...] March 23 2010 Fresno’s population is around 400,000 people, but the city is pleasantly sleepy. A large majority of residents are of Mexican descent, but you’ll also find large populations of Basque, Armenian, Central American and Vietnamese in the city. An unexpected find came last night when I spoke to a gentlemen by the name of [...] March 9 2010 I walked toward the bungalow on the far left because that’s where Geometry class was being held. We had bungalows at our school, next to the last remaining orange groves in the San Fernando Valley, because our real high school location was still under construction after the 1994 earthquake. Yes. I had classes [...] I spotted this at the Southern California Library in South Los Angeles, Ca. We set up a field recording to document youth who grew up in that part of LA and plastered on every grand space of the slightly disgruntled building was a mural, painting or poster. This is one of my favorites. From the [...] You can’t escape billboards in Los Angeles. They’ve been a signature of the skyline for decades and a valuable resource for advertisers to cram their messages down your throats. Recently they’ve gone digital, and sometimes they are illegal. What’s indisputable is their normalcy in Los Angeles; their presence is an instigator of great debate. I’ve [...] Feb 11, 2010 There’s a guy who will cut your hair on the street, live bands playing in spaces usually occupied by businessman grabbing a smoke during their break, and people “PAINTING LIVE” with onlookers contemplating if they’re witnessing something special. It’s the Downtown Art Walk standard now. I’ve never been to El Nopal Press when [...] Jan 18, 2010 You make me giggle, mr. advertisement. The way you make logic all topsy-turvy. I’m supposed to know that raw creativity can be stupid, but then history will absolve it. That’s neat. But tell me, please. What are people who don’t get it supposed to think? That glorifying fame-whores from the “Jersey Shore” stupid [...] Walking into No Longer Emtpy‘s newest transformation “Never Can Say Goodbye” – located in the defunct Tower Records space on the corner of 4th and Broadway in New York City – youthful memories of my time as a record store manager trampled my brain and I couldn’t do anything but smile at all the records, [...] Jan 16, 2010 I ask myself continuously if I’ll ever be content with the material I read; so much material and so little time. I think of myself as someone who prioritizes according to my immediate interests, but I’m devising a way to concentrate on one topic a month, eventually hitting the age of 90 and [...] Jan 10, 2010 I first met Judy (far right) at Guanabee’s first offices on Broadway street in Soho exactly three years ago. We never worked together for more than a month but there was enough there for a long-lasting friendship. Since 2007, Judy, Anna and I have met up for lunch, brunch, dinner and any combination [...] People told me to avoid opiate-fiends in Downtown Vancouver, so I expected tweaked out panhandlers to welcome me to my Downtown hotel. That wasn’t the case. The Listel Hotel offers a creative and unique space in the heart of Downtown Vancouver located on Robson street, only three blocks away from Stanley Park, a 20-minute walk [...] Chinati Center Art Classes from Alejandro De La Cruz on Vimeo. Nina and I wouldn’t allow Marfa’s closed shops, boutiques and galleries to snuff out our enthusiasm for adventure. Enlightened by some wonderful interns at The Chinati Foundation, Nina and I ventured over to the center for an Origami and paper-making workshop. I kept my hands [...] |
