April 24 2010 We disembarked from our trajinera at the lock. It’s a contraption built 24 years ago, after the 1985 earthquake, to take patrons from the touristy side of Xochimilco to the countryside. We were on our way back from Doll Island. Sergio says he was talking to Lipi and Sachin about India, and was distracted. Michael walked to the right of him. Anna and I were directly behind him. Without any warning, there was a splash and Sergio was gone. For three seconds, Sergio’s entire being had been swallowed by the murky grotesqueness of Xochimilco’s waters. “Holy shit!!!”
