Revaz told me to settle down, so I finally mixed in some Miike Snow and Aloe Blacc. I’m obsessing over electro-dance-pop from 2008 and no one can stop me! Randy Newman’s “I Love LA” reminds me of “blond bombshells”, neon swimsuits and aerosol cans filled with hairspray. It’s not the Los Angeles I identify with, in the 80′s or now. But every time I hear Tommy James & The Shondells singing “Crystal Blue Persuasion”, I drift to a Los Angeles filled with laughing abuelitas, [...] Panama! Latin, Calypso and Funk on the Isthmus 1965-75 is a collection of Panamanian songs from the 60′s and 70′s which, to my knowledge, were released in Panama but have hardly seen commercial success. There are three “Panama!” volumes and I recently downloaded V.1 & V.2. I recently heard a few tracks from a jukebox [...] Look, guys! I’m posting something other than “3652 Days!” I had never heard of Black Van before listening to their single “Yearning” on KCRW. But once I heard this cut, I began sliding my hand through the air like if I was polishing my nails on an imaginary buffer. Black Van is comprised of Kris Menace [...] The sun is rising above the buildings on St. Johns Pl. The wind has stopped its howling but the murmur outside is now of clanking heels and speeding vehicles. I always expect there to be less liveliness so early, but the world out there is bustling at the crack of dawn. Why don’t I awake [...] I’d advise you to either turn your headphones down or get ready to make your eardrums bleed. This comes from Jay Reatard’s 2006 release “Blood Visions.” Oh, it’s such a shame you’re not going to be contributing guitar riffs like this to Punklandia anymore. Bang bang bang away to this, friends. It’s going to be [...] I never knew what sounds like a defective fax machine would be so entrancing and likable. But that’s what Charlotte Gainsbourg’s second track “IRM” off of her album of the same name reminds me of. I can also hear what is undoubtedly fluorescent lights emitting feedback…or someone’s vibrator going off. Who knows!? Charlotte knows her [...] I’m out the door and the sun is shining on my back. It’s a vibrant 45 degrees in New York City and I’m riding the subway while bumping this today. Enjoy. New York City is a bit misty-eyed tonight because two of the city’s coolest residents decided an opportunity to live in South Africa for five months was just to good to pass up. We’re bidding them adios tonight. Flurries have been falling consistently for the last 24 hours and it doesn’t look to be letting [...] Dangerous Mouse (Gnarls Barkley) & James Mercer (The Shins) combined forces and created Broken Bells. Their self-titled album releases March 2010, but I’ve been bumping a few tracks for about a week. It’s already a 2010 favorite and will surely make lists at the end of this year. “Vaporize” is the second track on their [...] Song Of The Day: Utah Saints – “Something Good”: You’re Guaranteed To Do The Running Man After This.
I can’t drive without dancing. It’s probably worse than texting while driving, equivalent to applying makeup in your car and likely to disturb you if you cruise up alongside my car. I just can’t help it. I’m headed to Marfa, TX with El Paso, TX being my final destination today. Flicks are surely [...]
The duo comprised of Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss make up “Sleigh Bells.” Apparently they were a hit at CMJ. I only know them because Revaz knows my taste better than I know my taste and sent this to me a few days ago. We’ve had three no-shows at the recording booth today, [...] Everyone I know is anxiously awaiting Spike Jonze‘s Where The Wild Things Are. It opens October 16th. It’s a film likely to lure fantasies, hopes, dreams, smiles, and a big of magic out of you. Hell, Spike even makes me giddy when I see Fatlip on the screen. This song is “Hidaway” from the movie’s [...] I have to shower at the radio station today because the house my coworkers and I live in ran out of water. There’s a joke here about First World meeting Third World conditions and Mexico coming out on a top, but words fail me. It’s also our last day in Paonia, CO. I learned more about [...]
It’s 10:57pm in Paonia, CO. The water tank is rumbling and is causing a stir in the household. It is usually deathly quiet at this time of night. Sometimes I’ll hear a dog bark. Other times I’ll hear the wind. Usually I’ll hear the bashing of moth wings against wooden panels; its stir-crazy [...] Little Dragon is a Swedish Electronica group let by Swedish/Japanese singer Yukimi Nagano. They formed in 2006 and have since released their second full-length album titled “Machine Dreams”. The song you’ll hear today reminds of K-Mart parking lots, Teena Marie and cruising. I have yet to decipher the reason for this odd flashback, but I’m [...] I didn’t know Telekinesis before last month. It took a giant bag of soup dumplings, a YouTube propelled research session of their songs, and a Million Dollar Highway, windows down, red peaks towering over me, to finally solidify that I enjoyed these cats. Telekinesis is frontman Michael Benjamin Lerner‘s brain child and the band strums [...] Every now and then my father would take the 405 freeway to Interstate 5, and then through the wastelands of Highway 14, crossing over to Highway 58 near Mojave, Ca. That was his scenic route to Las Vegas, NV. Though the route is a longer passage, the arid landscape, tumbleweeds, sloping highways and darkness are [...] I can’t find the About section to Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros on their website because I keep staring at their tour schedule, trying to determine if they’ll be in New York City any time soon, but they have a gif of themselves twirling in circles like a bunch of hippies and there isn’t [...] Los Delinquentes is an Adalucian group formed in Jerez de la Frontera some time in 1998. Billy sent me this track – along with a few others – around a year after we met. I remember the compilation included Nina Pastori, Estrella Morente, Camaron de la Isla, Paco de Lucia and lots of Tomatito. [...] |
